Desk Cat

Do you have a pet cat? Cats seem to enjoy taking over your desk. You might as well make your own desk cat companion!

You will need:

  • Toilet paper roll
  • Construction paper or gift wrap
  • White paper
  • Scissors
  • Pencil or pen
  • Black marker
  • Glue or tape

Instructions:

  1. Wrap your roll around the construction paper or gift wrap. This is the cat’s fur color! Measure its length around the roll. Leave an inch longer than the roll horizontally and vertically. Then, cut out the paper.
  2. Wrap the paper around the roll. Leave an inch of paper above the roll. Glue the two ends.
  3. Fold down two sides of the extra paper inch. These are the ears.
  4. Draw a long, rounded tail from the fur color paper. Cut it out. Glue it behind the cat.
  5. Use the white paper for its eyes and nose. Color in the eye pupils and nose. Cut them out. Glue them onto the roll’s front side.
  6. Use the black marker to draw its smile and whiskers.

Rainbow Height Rolls

Reach the skies by making your own rainbow tube structures! There are endless possibilities. Shape a structure and see how high you can touch the sky!

You will need:

  • Several toilet paper rolls
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Colorful paint
  • Paintbrush

Instructions:

  1. Use scissors to cut toilet paper rolls in half. Also, leave some toilet paper rolls at their full length.
  2. Cut eight slits of a ½-inch length from each toilet paper roll. Use a ruler and pencil to help you measure the slits. (There should be four slits on the top, four on the bottom. They should be cut from the four sides of the tube.)
  3. Paint one color on the outside of the rolls. Use any or all rainbow colors, depending on paint color availability. As a reminder, the rainbow’s colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
  4. Stack the rolls by inserting their slits into each other.

DIY Bird Feeder

Feed your local birds with yummy seeds! But you don’t need to buy a bird feeder. It’s fun making your own Do-It-Yourself feeder!

You will need:

  • Toilet paper roll
  • Hole punch
  • 1-foot string
  • Wooden skewer
  • Birdseed
  • Plate
  • Cheese knife
  • Peanut butter
  • Outside tree with a branch

Instructions:

  1. Punch two holes at the roll’s top and bottom on opposite sides. This should result in four holes.
  2. Pull the string through the top holes. Let the roll hang in the middle of the string. Then, tie the string at its ends. This string is used to hang up the bird feeder.
  3. Pull the wooden skewer through the bottom holes. This stick gives a place for the birds to stand.
  4. Scatter birdseed onto the plate.
  5. Use the cheese knife to cover the outside roll with peanut butter. Make sure it’s coated all over. Fill in extra peanut butter into the skewer holes. This ensures the skewer stays put.
  6. Roll the roll into the plate’s seeds. Use your fingers to sprinkle seeds over any bare spots.
  7. Go outside and find a tree with a branch. Use the string to hang the roll onto the branch. (If it’s raining, don’t hang the bird feeder just yet. Please wait for a dry day!)

Rolling Marbles

You decide how the marbles should roll. Use toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls to make cool pathways! Don’t worry, you won’t lose your marbles testing and trying designs. Just have fun!

You will need:

  • Several toilet paper rolls
  • Several paper towel rolls
  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Roll of wide painter’s tape
  • Scissors
  • A tall, wide wall
  • At least 1 bucket
  • At least 1 marble

Instructions:

  1. Start planning your structure with paper and pencil. Draw the structure, length, and angles of your tube run. Think about: Where will you use the short toilet paper rolls? The long paper towel rolls? Which roll will you drop the marble in? Which roll will the marble exit from?
  2. Get the painter’s tape ready. Cut off several pieces and stick them to a surface.
  3. For each roll, hold it against the wall. Stick tape across the middle of the roll. The tape should stick to the roll’s left and right. This ensures the tape will hold the roll securely.
  4. Place your buckets under any ending tubes. The buckets will collect the marbles.
  5. Let the action begin! Drop your marbles into the opening tube. If the marbles don’t fall into any bucket, try again! Keep testing.
